Rail overhead line electrification research

University of Sheffield is working with Furrer+Frey and Network Rail on research to improve future overhead line electrification (OLE) performance. Pictured at Euston station on 29th March 2017, PhD students and staff made the return journey from Crewe in Network Rail’s MENTOR train to observe line and pantograph behaviour on the West Coast Mainline, and also got a chance to see the latest track infrastructure monitoring equipment in use on the network.

Over the next two years this collaboration will build on existing modelling of overhead line dynamics at Sheffield (journal, open access), and focus on the long term performance of some of the newest OLE technology on the UK network.
